Last night, at our Surrey Social Media Tribes event, something amazing happened that rendered Nick speechless, me tearful, and both of us overwhelmed and humbled.
As Nick started to introduce the evening, one of our delegates, Sally Asling of Surrey Lets, suddenly marched up to the front of the room and announced that she was going to "hi-jack" the meeting for a few moments. Nick and I wondered what on earth was going on!
Sally then made the most wonderful and empassioned speech. I wish I could remember exactly what she said, word for word, but we were not recording the event, so I will just have to paraphrase it.
Sally said that it was the first year anniversary of since she started attending our networking events. She therefore wanted to acknowledge our contribution to her business success.
"Fourteen months to the day, I was working in corporate land and sacked somebody for using FaceBook during office hours. Two months later, I decided to leave the corporate world, and set up my own business, Surrey Lets. I happened upon Nick and Vanessa's monthly event, which, at the time, was to do with property as well as optimising the social web. Through this, I was introduced to the social web, and I saw the opportunity this presented, and embraced it, to the extent that I can now attribute a significant chunk of my income to these activities.
There is most definitely an ROI on engaging on the social web and I learned this through Nick and Vanessa. I wanted to let them know the very positive impact they have had on me and my business, and to thank them for their support and generosity of sharing information. I want Vanessa and Nick to know that they have created so much goodwill and loyalty in their Tribe, and that I am proud to be a member of their community".
Sally and another of our delegates, Richard Smith, then produced champagne and nibbles for the whole group, which they had arranged and sponsored without our knowledge!!
We had no idea that they had organised this amazing tribute and surprise for us!
When you create a closeness to the extent that someone wants to celebrates the effort that you put into the world in such a generous way, it is a very touching moment. It also proves that community creates emotional wealth as much as financial wealth.
Nick and I were totally overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity showed to us last night. We could feel the love and friendship in the room and my eyes welled up. It was a truly special moment that Nick and I will both treasure and smile about.
She didn't say this last night, but, in the past 12 months, Sally has started a second business, has an industry-leading blog, a dedicated following on Twitter, and been picked up by various newspapers as a commentator and to write content - and all this came about through engaging, making connections, and being found on the social web.
Sally, we are also honored to be part of your tribe.
Nick and I are very proud of Sally and all she has achieved and she is a shining star on the social web, and leads by example. (She has written a blog about last night from her point of view >>> here).
Therefore, this blog is not about us.
It is dedicated to our tribe - our dear friends, associates, peers, and learn-ed people who chose to support us in supporting you. This is not about the individual, it is about the community.
It is about the power of friendship and community.
It is a tribute to the fact that sharing people is as important as sharing information.
It is a testament to the fact that "none of us is as smart as all of us". ~ Kevin Kelly.
The social web is fed by "people power". The business success stories of the future will be those people who appreciate that contributing to the web and community, not taking from it, is the way forwards.
Financial wealth is important, but emotional wealth is priceless.
From myself and Nick, a heartfelt thank you to you all for supporting us and inspiring us. As each new member joins the tribe, we have new experience and connections to add to the mix, and we all become stronger and grow as a result.
Here's to the most supportive Property Tribe on the web. YOU!

Just adding very, very belated congratulations, and also well done to Sally for co-ordinating it. Sorry it's taken me so long to catch up with this thread ...
